Why Just 5 Minutes a Day Can Transform How You Feel

When I first started adding small rituals into my day, I was at a very low point. I was juggling a toddler while trying to get a business off the ground, all while navigating a mild bout of postnatal depression. I was a perfectionist with low self-esteem, a workaholic, and completely hooked on social media. I was prone to negative thinking and felt like I was running on empty most of the time.

One thing I learned during that time has always stuck with me: it takes three positive thoughts to outweigh one negative thought. That’s how powerful negativity can be.

Back in 2018, I was working with my coach at the time, Andrea Callanan, who encouraged me to create a list of “self-care top ups”  - up to 20 things that I knew would bring me joy and fill me up. The idea was simple: if I could bring just one or two of those things into my day, I could begin to shift how I felt.

And slowly, that’s exactly what happened.

Small Shifts That Made a Big Difference

Over the last five years, I’ve added simple rituals and habits into my everyday life. Nothing crazy. Nothing expensive. Just small things that help me feel more joy, balance and peace. Here are some of the ones that have made the biggest difference for me:

  • Smiling, even when I didn’t feel like it. As Thích Nhất Hạnh said: “Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy.”
  • Grounding myself outdoors. Standing barefoot on the grass, or simply enjoying a herbal tea in the garden.
  • Creating calm spaces. Lighting a candle at the dining table and sitting quietly for ten minutes, even when I thought I “didn’t have time.”
  • Locking my phone away in the evenings. I realised that scrolling was draining me, not energising me. I now keep a basic alarm clock by my bed instead.
  • Protecting my sleep. Learning how to wind down, cutting back on caffeine, and creating a routine that actually lets my mind rest.

Individually, these things don’t sound life-changing. But together? They’ve transformed my quality of life.

I used to think I needed a big reset or a dramatic change to feel better. But what I’ve learned is that it’s the small things, done consistently, that make the real difference.

Taking five minutes to breathe, smile, stretch, or step outside doesn’t just make you feel good in that moment - it adds up. It shifts your energy, it reminds you that you can create space for yourself, and it helps you feel more alive.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is this: it isn’t about knowing what would help, it’s about actually doing it. The simple choice to add one small ritual into your day can be the difference between feeling low and feeling uplifted.
